Mersea Island or, as in Old English, Meresig which means ‘island of the pool’ is an island located in Essex, England. The island has thought to have been inhabited since pre-Roman times and was a popular holiday destination for the residents of Camulodunum which today is known as Colchester. The island is split into two parts, West Mersea which is inhabited and East Mersea which is farmland and are connected by a causeway (the Strood) to the mainland which is known to flood at high tide. Mersea Island is rich in history, being mentioned in the Doomsday Book and was known then as Meresai it has many churches dating back to the 7th century and was popular with smugglers around 16-19th century and has many war posts that the troops used. Boasting a rich fishing heritage the island is popular for its seafood especially its oysters. Located just 9 miles from Colchester and in the estuary of the Blackwater and Colne rivers the island is accessible by road or foot.
